[XeTeX] Any tricks to making transparency work?

Hi all,

first - thanks to everyone for helping me with my previous question.
I've since been able to play around a little bit, and I'm learning my
way around.

I'm working my way through the fontspec manual, and I'm at the section
5, the non font-specific options.  I can't get the transparency to
work: every time I compile everything is fully not transparent.  I
even downloaded the code from Dario Taraborelli's site
(http://nitens.org/taraborelli/latex) and the same thing happened.

Any ideas for why this might be?
