There were several problems with the newly-added code for \primitive,  
etc.; please try rev 943 (xetex 0.9993.0) and see if this works  
reliably for you now.

PS to Mike, who began this thread: I'm afraid this is completely  
unrelated to the xdvipdfmx failure you reported; it won't help with  
that.
