put this in your preamble
% disable extra space after some punctuation
\frenchspacing
Personally, I think this should be set as default by the installer, like
A4 is set default for the region where that is used. The 'non french'
spacing, is mainly used in United States (to my limited knowledge on
this matter). For more information, see
