[XeTeX] xelatex + slanted

    I abhor the very concept of having distinct "slanted" vs "italic" 

Of course that's your prerogative, although having such a fundamental
package not make this distinction that has been present in TeX since day
one seems rather, um, arbitrary :).

Personally I've found slanted useful sometimes for (1) titles, and
(2) "metavariables" in program documentation.  In both cases, italic can
seem rather fancy and out of place.
