I guess the aim is to show that the vowel sign is something
added to the 'ka' letter.

It may be safer and clearer to write something like

    कु can be decomposed into क and ~ु

(NB: there may appear a dotted circle above the u-sign in
your source document; that's how some software renders
combining characters with no proper preceding character
and it will *not* show up in your output.) Of course
nothing stops you from using different colors here too,
but it is hardly necessary.
