  Wholeheartedly agreed.  The Companion books' greatest asset is in
being reasonably complete and giving a good overview of all the aspects
of LaTeX computing, and they can't always go into the details of all the
individual packages.  If you're (the OP) interested in the latest state
of some particular package, check the documentation.  In any case, what
was true when the book was written should remain valid today, as Peter
points out.
