[XeTeX] squeezing vertical space before/after verse environment

I think that the lengths you want to modify are: \topsep and \partopsep

Try to change them using \setlength or \addtolength

Note: \partopsep is used only if the environment starts a new paragraph,
in this case the length between the preceding paragraph and the first
item (ie the paragraph in the verse environment) is equal to
\parsep+\partopsep
