Hello Cyril and Jjgod,
Thank you for the help on specifying the output driver from the
command line. This works well.

I have been unable to resolve the issue of vertical text, however:

I added the packages gezhu.sty, the styles in the zhspacing package.
However, my
TeXLive 2007 (current) installation returns the error when using these
packages:

(/Users/rangel/texmf/tex/latex/zhspacing.sty
! XeTeX 0.997 or above required to use zhspacing.
l.83 ... 0.997 or above required to use zhspacing}

The piece of code in zhspacing.sty that may be returning the error is:
\catcode`\@=11
\ifx\XeTeXrevision\@undefined
   \errmessage{XeTeX required to use zhspacing}%
\fi
\ifx\XeTeXinterchartokenstate\@undefined
   \errmessage{XeTeX 0.997 or above required to use zhspacing}%
\fi

I searched around and found an indication that 3.141592-2.2-0.996
(Web2C 7.5.6)
is the current version in TeXLive, not 0.997. I located mention of the
0.997 version
in MikTeX.

Is there a work around for this issue? It appears that gezhu requires
zhspacing, so that
I would have to resolve the zhspacing issue first to produce classical
Chinese typesetting
using gezhu.

Thank you for any ideas you might be able to provide,
David
