Just a note to make it clear that the credit for this belongs to  
Jjgod Jiang, who identified the problem (it's a configure issue with  
Leopard, and I'm still on Tiger here so I hadn't run into it) and  
gave us the workaround -- see the recent "How do I build..." thread.
