[XeTeX] loosing some active characters

You need to specify the tex-text mapping:

- in plain TeX, when loading a font:

	\font\a=MyPreferredFont:mapping=tex-text

- in LaTeX with the fontspec package, by adding the declaration:

	\defaultfontfeatures{Mapping=tex-text}

By the way, --- is not an active character, but one of the weird  
ligatures built in TeX font metrics.
