Might be, but babel would see ancientgreek. According to other answers
Polyglosia converts that to "variant=ancient".

One should not need so much trickery. Ancient greek atterns are
already shipped and working in both MikTeX and TeXLive, at least in TL
2008.

I have no idea how Polyglossia works, but the examples posted by
others probaby work out of the box on a modern TeX intsallation (and
should work with plain TeX as well).
