It's the letter "O", presumably standing for "ordinary". There's also  
"C" for "caps" (but the small caps feature is still provided in the  
"O" font) and "U" for a specially drawn underlined family (which is a  
nice touch). I'm not sure what the "O C" font is, though -- it looks  
the same as the caps font.
