Which introduces a completely different working principle: on-the-fly
conversion to OTF, which directly fits into XeTeX. This is also
completely different to fc-cache/fc-list/fc-match (i.e.,
libfontconfig), one way in X11 to organise font use. It does not seem
to be enabled on Mac OS X – no dependency to libfontconfig. And the
same is true for MS Windows/MiKTeX.

XeTeX utilises the "font service" of the system it runs on. On Linux
there is nothing better than fontconfig. MS Windows and Mac OS X have
their own proprietary services.

On the Mac, if you have Mac OS X 10.4 or later (10.4.6 is recommended
as minimum), you can use Apple's Font Tools suite: http://
developer.apple.com/fonts/ (you need to become a "developer," which
only costs registration). It has tools to alter and enhance fonts.
And one particular (command line) tool is ftxinstalledfonts, that can
give a lot of information on the fonts installed.
