Yes, but the problem is that both put their binary directories (such  
as /opt/local/bin for MacPorts and /sw/bin for Fink) at the beginning  
of PATH. As a result, all the various binaries installed through  
packages and dependencies take precedence over the OS X binaries.

One example: the fontconfig and libpng components installed by OS X  
inside /usr/X11/bin will be overridden by those installed by MacPorts  
or Fink if any. Nothing bad should happen as a result, but you never  
know...
