OK, this may account for your problems; xetex and xdvipdfmx are much  
happier with fontconfig 2.3 or newer. (It's the "using" version that  
matters; that's the version installed on your system.) While the  
programs can run with older libraries, these do not handle all the  
types of naming found in current OpenType fonts, and this does lead  
to problems with some of the larger typeface families.

Fontconfig 2.3.2 has been the "stable" version since early 2005, and  
2.4 since late 2006, so you might want to see if there's an updated  
package available for your Linux distribution. Using at least version  
2.3 is highly recommended.
