[XeTeX] Traditional TeX ligatures once again

  XeTeX is still TeX, so you can always use things like “.{}..” (or even
“.\hbox{}..” if the former doesn't work — it happened to me once; I
wanted to prevent a ligature).

  But in addition to what you say, I have to mention that in French
typography, the ellipsis is supposed to really be three dots, without
additional space between them; so in most cases you wouldn't like the
default glyph for the ellipsis. Granted, in an OpenType font you could
use the ‘locl’ feature to map the Unicode character to some other glyph
for the French language …
