Have you tried to invoke 'xdvipdfmx --help'? If it shows for you `` 
[a4]´´ too, then we have to conclude, it doesn't. The work around  
would be to change the invocation of XeLaTeX:

	xelatex -output-driver='xdvipdfmx -p letter'
