[XeTeX] using xetex in make

Thanks for all the replies (Bruno and others)!  Bruno's reply put me on 
the trail, and the problem turned out to be User Stupidity.  My makefile 
re-defined $TEXINPUTS...  I can't remember why I did that, but I'm not 
doing it any more.
