I now notice that I have 2 versions of it...
one in /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/tex/xelatex/fontspec/
[2006/04/26 v1.9a Advanced font selection for XeLaTeX]
and the second
/Users/cyril/Library/texmf/tex/xetex/fontspec/fontspec.sty
[2006/06/07 v1.10 Advanced font selection for XeLaTeX]
which is the one kpsewhich picks up. I've removed the old one and now
things work. i don't see why it made a difference, unless kpswhich
lies...

Anyway, thank you for your help, working solution and reminder of the
obsoleteness of the opening lines I used (copy-pasted from an old
document...)
Cyril
