This looks strange ... The name "XeTeX-reference.pdf" has 19 bytes
(proof: echo -n "XeTeX-reference.pdf" | wc -c), and it shouldn't be a
file, but:

-rw-r--r--   1 pete  pete  206289 25 Sep 11:54 XeTeX-reference.pdf
lrwxr-xr-x   1 pete  pete      19 25 Sep 11:54 xetexref.pdf -> XeTeX-
reference.pdf

which is quite the same situation as in /usr/local/teTeX/share/
texmf.local/doc/xetex:

-rw-r--r--   1 pete  admin  206289 13 Aug 18:42 XeTeX-reference.pdf
lrwxrwxrwx   1 pete  admin      19 25 Okt 00:51 xetexref.pdf -> XeTeX-
reference.pdf

(I wonder why they're not owned by "admin," my software installer
account)

Last night I missed a train due to rain so I updated XeTeX via svn
(and also my i-Packages). So my guess is that the tape archives (tar
files) with the XeTeX sources are not correct. Which would explain
why xpdf and Adobe Reader fail on this Mac OS X file alias? What do
you have in /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/doc/xetex or where
ever the XeTeX documentation is stored (XeTeX-notes, fontspec,
fontspec-example, XeTeX-samples directory)?

The light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off due to budget
cuts.
