A possibility that comes to mind just after re-reading this message:  
it may be that nothing is wrong, but that you had simply put your  
addition inside ~/Library/texmf/tex/latex, for example, which is read  
after /Library/teTeX/share/texmf.local/tex/xelatex which is the  
default location for fontspec.

The complete output of the above command, indicating the order of  
precedence of the directories inside the texmf trees when xelatex  
reads files of type "tex", is:
