Normally, yes; obviously, this is not the "supported" approach  
(inasmuch as anything is "supported" around here!), but it should work.

What you can't generally do is use xetex and xdv2pdf versions of  
differing vintages; and you have to install the new xetex.pool file  
and rebuild format files after any update. (The install-xetex script  
does this.)

No; an i-Installer-delivered update will simply overwrite this.
