There is a difference between

- "letterspacing" (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Letterspacing) as a
means to adjust a line with glue not only between the words but also
between the letters within words - which seems to very common in
american typography - and looks awful at least to my taste and

- "Sperren" (see http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sperren), which was used
commonly in german typography for emphasis, mainly in the times where
blackletter fonts ("gebrochene Schrift") were used routinely and those
fonts usually lacked a bold face.
