Hi Herb,

There's much I need to learn yet. Upon your suggestion I did run 
texhash. It looks like for my purposes the directories I need to focus 
on are:

/home/dennis/.texmf-var/web2c

and

/var/lib/texmf/web2c

So I ran:

texhash /home/dennis/.texmf-var/web2c

and

sudo texhash /var/lib/texmf/web2c

This created the Is-R file in each of these directories. I'm assuming 
that I need to run this each time I make a change to my system, correct?
