[XeTeX] Getting xelatex to run

Dear list members,

several times over the last months I tried to get xelatex to work, but 
all I get is an error message: `I can't find the format file `xelatex.fmt'!'

What am I doing wrong? (I am working on Ubuntu Dapper, tetex installation.)
