Thanks for the tip.  I was aware that that sort of thing was  
possible, but was a bit wary about taking such a step, as it seemed a  
slightly "autistic" thing to be wanting to do in the first place.   
But I guess Mac OS X and XeTeX couldn't care less how the numbers  
they crunch get generated.  :)
