Well, thank you very much indeed, though, in the words of Anna  
Russell, I'm "as befogged as before." It worked, of course, but what  
did I just do? It feels as if I just threw a pinch of eye-of-newt at  
the computer and everything was fine again. Illumination? 8>}

Also of interest is the fact that the XeTeX FontName/B thing did not  
work -- again -- and only clearing the font caches made the problem  
go away. I can't help it -- my eyes are beginning to cross...
