On Panther Console has a knob you can draw right and then the root of 
some trees become visible -- not real trees but systems of file and 
directory hierarchies in the file system. From this drawer much more 
log files are accessible ...

Maybe it helps to launch before next dinner or breakfast DiskUtility 
from /Applications/Utilities and make it check disk permissions ... (it 
can take up to an hour, and this time is not wasted when you can do 
something useful during this period, I for example visit a public 
swimming pool)
