[XeTeX] Newline breakes XeLaTeX

Hi everybody,

I encountered a problem with XeLaTeX, the following minimal example 
produces a lot of squares and hangs TeXShop

%&program=xelatex
%&encoding=UTF-8 Unicode
\documentclass{article}
\begin{document}
This is a test \newline

to show how newline breaks TeTeX
\end{document}


The problem is \newline, if I remove it, everything works fine. If my 
memory doesn't fail me this used to run, some update must have ruined 
it, although I don't know which one. I currently have a TL2004 tetex3 
setup.
