Great.
It's nice to know that the problem fits neatly into a low-level category
rather than having to cope with special cases...

  ... nevertheless, I'd still like an example with your preamble.
My own attempts are hitting warnings like:

! Improper \endL.
<recently read> \endL

l.2 \select at language {british}


Perhaps this is due to using an older version of Babel.
It would be good to know what version you are using,
and precisely the order in which packages are loaded
and the languages initiated.
