[XeTeX] Frenchspacing in XeTeX

Indeed. I was really confused until trying a fourth variation which 
should be the syntactically correct plain TeX input, I think:

	[Transl.\ from {\it Inzh.-Fiz.\ Zh.}\ {\bf 39}, 619–623.]

It gives the same output as the above third variation, indicating thus 
that:

- \frenchspacing and the equivalent \sfcode`\.=1000 do what they are 
supposed to do (namely making all spaces stretch by the same amount on 
a given line).

- "\ " does not work as it should when applied to Hoefler Text Italic. 
Or is this caused by the presence of the "-"?
