\pdfimage is a pdfTeX primitive.
XeTeX is *not* pdfTeX, so this just cannot work.

Please read the documentation about XeTeX, at the SIL site,
to see how to use XeTeX primitives for graphics inclusion
and transformations, else use XeLaTeX and the {graphicx}
package, as in Will Robertson's reply.

As for your experience with the {beamer} package,
this is probably using pdfTeX primitives to insert coding
for PDF effects. This cannot work with XeTeX for the same
reason that \pdfimage doesn't work.

XeTeX is only very new.
One day we hope to have an application that has the PDF
flexibility of pdfTeX as well as the superior font-handling
that is currently possible with XeTeX.

  That day isn't here yet.
