Yeah, nuisance that Zapfino doesn't have the ``smart quotes'' feature 
like Hoefler Text does.

Nice. Here's a thought --- have you tried putting invisible / white 
text right at the beginning of a line to get the ``the'' ligature?

Yeah, that's one of the ones I really like --- I've got a list of 
things I'm hoping Prof. Zapf and Linotype will be interested in fixing 
/ changing....
