For my part, when organizing fonts, I find it much handier to use the 
name of the font / foundry as the top-level entry (and in each such

That way, if I want to remove support for a font family or transfer it 
to another system, I've only one directory to handle.

I do this in an ad hoc fashion in my personal / localtexmf setups, so 
that it's:

texmf/fonts/supplier/typeface/type/

instead of:

texmf/fonts/type/supplier/typeface/
