Of course, as personal boxes are the most prominent situation, it
won't be used at most sites. But I think that almost all non-personal
installations will mount the texmf-tree from somewhere in read-only
mode (it's faster than read-write). Then fonts/tmp/pk/ is typically a
symlink to somewhere else, why not to /var/texmf/fonts/pk/ on Unix
systems?

And isn't /var/texmf/web2c/texmf.cnf a good place for a config file
augmenting a CD installation with a local tree?

I admit that this discussion is Unix-centric, in case of a CD
installation on a Windoof PC we won't have symlinks.
