var vs. ro data in TDS

A (more-or-less) standard place (i.e., subtree) for generated fonts
    would be a Good Thing.

Where do you suggest?

And for Unix systems we should note that this
place is often a symlink in a /var area.

I don't see why we should recommend generated fonts be kept separately
from ``original'' fonts. It might be useful at some sites; but it isn't
everywhere.

I agree we should mention this case. More than that, I don't know.

What I meant was, we obviously cannot say ``you will use
/var/something'' as the place to put them. We only control stuff under
texmf/, not other system directories.
