    This version of TeX currently supports (delete ones which don't apply):
[I didn't delete anything.]
     * only one directory for each sort of file (for example, all tfm
       files have to be in fonts/tfm)

     * a list of directories for each sort of file (for example, you can
       specify fonts/tfm/adobe and fonts/tfm/monotype)

     * one level of subdirectory searching (for example, you can
       speficify fonts/tfm and it will find fonts/tfm/adobe/ptmr7t.tfm(

     * many-level subdirectory searching (for example, you can
       specify fonts/tfm and it will find fonts/tfm/adobe/times/ptmr7t.tfm)

     * many-level subdirectory searching with pruning (for example you can
       specify fonts//tfm and it will find
       fonts/adobe/times/tfm/ptmr7t.tfm)

     * many-level subdirectory searching with a cache to avoid
       searching the whole directory structure for every file (for
       example, the ls-R file in kpathsea).

     * something else (please specify!)
