in reply to c puram,
i checked what protex and texlive are, and here is what i find :
**********
TexLive

TeX Live is an easy way to get up and running with TeX. It provides a comprehensive TeX system for most types of Unix, including GNU/Linux and MacOSX, and also Windows. It includes all major freely-available TeX-related programs, macro packages, and fonts, including support for many languages around the world.

ProTex

What is it?
ProTeX is a perl(1) script to produce a LaTeX compatible document from a GMAO (formerly DAO) Fortran source code with standard ProTeX prologues. For a more detailed description of ProTeX functionality, GMAO (DAO) Prologue and other conventions, consult:
Sawyer, W., and A. da Silva, 1997: ProTeX: A Sample Fortran 90 Source Code Documentation System. DAO Office Note 97-11.
***********
i wonder if there is some confusion in comparing the two for learning latex.

i have been using the tetex distribution for many years under linux, and there is also a number of latex help documents, especially those written by C.V. Radhakrishnan. i use latex and pdflatex to produce pdf documents from latex files, and xfig to make drawings.
