I think the best solution is the one suggested by David Kastrup of using 
the "enumerate" package and the {(a)] option. The 
trouble with 
  
     \renewcommand{\labelenumi}{(\alph{enumi})} 

is that you wil not get cross references to the items right. For this 
you may have to do something like

\renewcommand{\theenumi}{(\alph{enumi})}
\renewcommand{\labelenumi}{\theenumi}
