[Tuglist] "p" for page or column?

Dear sirs,

I think that \begin{table*}....\end{table*}
\begin{figure*}.....\end{figure*} span the float into twocolumn

When  I use  tables  and figures  with  [p] option  in  a two  columns
document, floats  are not  covering full page,  rather one  column has
floats and  other column has text  for all such 4  pages. Can't I have
all floats  coming on  two pages  i.e. four columns  on two  pages, in
place of four columns of floats spread over four pages?
