Thank you very much for your suggestions. I had some
`Arial' fonts in my graphics and I think that was
creating problems. On changing them to `Times Roman'
I could get a good pdf file (by using the following
commands as suggested) that reads well both in xpdf
and acroread

dvips -Pcm foo.dvi -o foo.ps 
ps2pdf foo.ps
