David Kastrup <David.Kastrup@t-online.de> had solved my problems with
Type 3 fonts some time earlier. The solution was:
dvips -Ppdf -G0 -o psfile dvifile
ps2pdf psfile pdfile
Unfortunately the problem has now cropped up with a new dimension that
has stumped me. A particular scientific article has the following
mathematical symbols $\Lambda$, $\Psi$ and $\Sigma$ in it. When run
through latex, then dvips (with -Ppdf -G0 etc) and ps2pdf, the result
is a set of complaints about missing glyphs:
dvips: Warning: missing glyph `Psi'
dvips: Warning: missing glyph `Psi'
] [2<td.eps>
dvips: Warning: missing glyph `Lambda'

The predictable result was that the pdf file had solid blobs of ink
whereever those three symbols had occurred in the dvi file.
What to do now? I notice that when Acrobat distiller creates pdf
files, it often uses specialised symbol files that are not Type
1. Is there no standard set of fonts that any installation can be
expected to have, which will contain all the standard scientific
symbols?
