    I see the same exact thing on Solaris 10.

Right, and as I wrote earlier (off-list), the most direct next step
would be for one of you with access to an i386-solaris machine to run
the problematic binary under the debugger and see what is happening and
why the output is not being created.

Any hope for that?

P.S. I'll be away/offline the next few days.  Back Monday.  I expect we
will freeze tlnet updates and start committing new binaries not too long
