Hi Vladimir,

this is the TRIP test (your output is preceded by 'PASS: tiedir/tie.test'
and followed by 'FAIL: trip.test') and not supposed to use mktexfmt.

The first step
   ./tex --progname=initex --ini <$srcdir/triptrap/trip1.in >tripin.fot
is supposed to create ./trip.fmt but fails to do so:
   ../../../texk/web2c/trip.test[32]: 14028 Memory fault(coredump)

The rest is a consequence of that.
