Do you want to use pdftex, or pdflatex? If you want to use the
latter, you should select it from the drop down list in the toolbar.
If that works, you can make the change permanent in Edit >
Preferences... > Typesetting > Default.<br>

Otherwise, this sounds like a MiKTeX problem (i.e.,
miktex-pdftex.exe doesn't work), in which case there's not much you
can change in TeXworks.<br>
For testing purposes, I'd recommend running miktex-pdftex (or
miktex-pdflatex) from the command line and see if that works. If
not, MiKTeX is probably not installed (or configured) correctly. I'd
try to update the format database (presumably from the MiKTeX
administrative tool), but this is really a question better followed
up on on a MiKTeX related mailing list.<br>
