Very well, I concede :-)  Testing on an early reference Pascal 
implemenation, I see :

$ tex
This is TeX, Version 3.1415b [PD VMS 3.4] (preloaded format=plain 94.6.22)
! Emergency stop.
<*> \nonstopmode

No pages of output.
