This article was published a while ago so some of information are not
entirely accurate, for instance, since Qt 4.8 (not released yet
unfortunately, but you can get the source from qt.gitorious.org),
you can set the hintingPreference of a QFont to get subpixel positioned
text, with NoHinting or VerticalHinting you can get the same layout
result in X11, Mac OS X and Windows. See [1] for details.
