Try creating a tool that does the equivalent of

latexmk -pdfdvi -e '$dvipdf = "dvipdfmx %O -o %D %S";' file.tex

which tells latexmk to go directly from dvi to pdf using dvipdfmx.

How can it be achieved in Ubuntu 10.04?
