which seemed to go ok, ending with Complete!<br>

$install-tl -gui wizard<br>
again; the result was the following much shorter error message:<br>
"./install-tl: Initialization failed (in setup_unix_one):<br>
could not find a usable program for wget.<br>
./install-tl: Goodbye."<br>

please explain what I'm doing wrong (or not doing)?<br>

I don't run Fedora (and I never installed texlive from it's
distribution), but it seems you need the wget program. It should be in
a package called wget, but if not, just search for the package
containing it.<br>
