all ams document classes place equation numbers on the left by
default. to get them on the right hand side, use the "reqno"
option:
\documentclass[reqno]{amsart}
this is explained (albeit not as clearly as it might be) in the
manual "user's guide for the amsmath package", available from
http://www.ams.org/tex/amslatex.html
it's in the section on "options".

Subject: [texhax] Equation Numbering
Dear sir/madam,
I have written an 'amsart' using Winedt 5.3 and the equation numbers are
appearing on the left hand side as default. Is there anything I can do to
move them to the right? I am not using the 'leqno' command and I see no
reason why they should not apear on the right hand side. Hope you can
help,
Regards,
Michael.
